The Federal Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening professionalism in Nigeria’s education system with the unveiling of a new digital portal dedicated to teachers.

Launched in Abuja by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria in partnership with the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria programme, the platform is designed to create a credible national database of teachers, streamline licensing, and open up opportunities for professional development.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a turning point in teacher management. “Today, we are not merely unveiling a portal, we are opening a new chapter – a chapter where technology, innovation, and efficiency become the heartbeat of teacher professionalism in our country,” she said.

The portal will provide seamless registration and licensing of teachers, ensure transparency, and improve accountability within the sector. Beyond that, it offers real-time access to training opportunities, helping teachers remain up to date in a rapidly evolving world.

Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, welcomed the move and reaffirmed the UK government’s support. He highlighted the importance of building systems that integrate Nigeria’s diverse teaching workforce, from community teachers to those in faith-based and low-cost private schools. “They need to be integrated, they need to be smart, but they also need to be motivated,” Attfield stressed.

This portal marks an investment not only in teachers but in the children they serve. By ensuring that every child is taught by a trained and licensed professional, the initiative directly upholds child’s right to education.
