FG Orders TRCN to Sack Unqualified Teachers

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has called for the urgent removal of unqualified teachers from classrooms across Nigeria, warning that mediocrity in the teaching profession will no longer be tolerated.
Speaking during the inauguration of the 5th Governing Council of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in Abuja, the minister charged the new council members to see their appointments not as honorary, but as a national duty to restore integrity to the profession and safeguard the future of Nigerian children.
“This is not business as usual,” Alausa declared. “You must completely eliminate the presence of unqualified teachers from our classrooms. Revoke licenses of those who tarnish the dignity of the profession.”
Alausa announced that the council’s performance will be evaluated quarterly against strict Key Performance Indicators, with no room for excuses or delays. He stressed that the ministry, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, is committed to professionalising teaching and holding educators to the highest global standards.
Quoting Aristotle, Alausa reminded the council that “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all,” underscoring the moral and civic responsibility of teachers in shaping future generations.
He called on all stakeholders to act: “To our teachers: This is your council—own it. To parents and communities: Hold us accountable. To the council: The time for rhetoric is over. The work begins now.”
In a passionate appeal, he called for national unity in the fight for quality education: “Though our tribes and tongue may differ, we should stand united in one cause—that every child, from Sokoto to Calabar, from Maiduguri to Yenagoa, is taught by a qualified, inspired, and TRCN-certified teacher proud to serve.”
Beyond policy, performance indicators, and reform lies a truth that must never be forgotten: every Nigerian child has a fundamental right to quality education. Not as a privilege, but as a promise. A promise the government, teachers, and society must now uphold without compromise.
