FG Proposes Fresh N5bn for Safe Schools Amid Rising Attacks, N144bn Spending Probe Raises Accountability Questions

The Federal Government’s proposal to allocate an additional N5bn to the Safe School Initiative comes amid renewed concerns over school safety and the impact of insecurity on children’s right to education and development.
From a child rights perspective, safe and stable learning environments are essential for children to consistently attend school, engage in classroom activities and achieve their developmental milestones. However, continued incidents of school attacks and abductions have raised concerns that many children are still exposed to unsafe conditions that disrupt learning and affect their emotional wellbeing.
Education stakeholders note that when children are forced to learn in insecure environments, it can lead to absenteeism, reduced concentration and, in some cases, withdrawal from school. These disruptions can have long-term effects on academic performance and limit opportunities for children to acquire the skills needed for future growth and independence.
The Safe School Initiative was introduced to address these challenges by improving security infrastructure and protecting vulnerable schools, particularly in high-risk areas. Despite years of funding and policy efforts, recurring security incidents have prompted questions about the effectiveness of implementation and the extent to which allocated resources have translated into safer school environments.
Concerns have also been raised about accountability and oversight in the management of funds dedicated to the programme. Stakeholders emphasize that beyond increased funding, ensuring proper utilisation, transparent monitoring and equitable distribution of resources is critical to achieving meaningful improvements in school safety.
Observers argue that strengthening school protection measures is not only a security priority but also a child development imperative, as safe learning environments are central to ensuring uninterrupted education and supporting children’s physical, emotional and cognitive growth.t
