The Federal Government has announced the abolition of Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria and introduced a compulsory 12-year uninterrupted basic education system. This new structure replaces the current 6-3-3-4 system with a 12-4 model, ensuring that every child receives continuous education up to the age of 16 before pursuing higher education.
As part of this reform, the government has also proposed 16 years as the minimum age for entry into tertiary institutions. This policy shift was revealed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting in Abuja. The meeting, attended by education commissioners from all 36 states, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) representatives, and stakeholders in the education sector, served as a platform to discuss the implementation of this major reform.
According to Dr. Alausa, integrating secondary education into the basic education system will provide uninterrupted learning for students and eliminate financial and systemic barriers that often force children out of school. He emphasized that this 12-year basic education model aligns with global best practices, as seen in many developed countries, and will enhance vocational and entrepreneurial training, equipping students with essential skills for both higher education and employment.
