Child Protection

“Follow Me, I’ll Pay You ₦1,000”, Lagos Outrage as Predator Targets Child Hawker in Viral Video

A disturbing viral video circulating online has reignited urgent concerns around child protection and the safeguarding of children in public spaces, particularly in urban centres like Lagos. The footage captures an alleged attempt by an adult male to lure a young girl engaged in street hawking with ₦1,000 in exchange for sexual activity, an incident that underscores the daily risks faced by children forced into informal economic activities.

The situation highlights multiple systemic failures. First is the exposure of children to unsafe environments without adequate supervision, increasing their vulnerability to grooming, exploitation, and abuse. Street hawking, while often driven by economic hardship, places children, especially girls, in direct contact with predatory individuals who exploit their innocence and financial need.

Equally troubling is the reaction of bystanders who reportedly attempted to excuse the suspect’s behaviour on the grounds of alleged mental instability. Child protection principles are unequivocal. No condition justifies harm or attempted harm against a child. Such responses not only normalize dangerous conduct but also weaken accountability and deterrence.

The child’s ability to speak up and contradict the suspect is significant and reflects the importance of empowering children with the confidence and awareness to resist and report inappropriate advances. However, not all children possess this awareness or courage, making preventive measures critical.

This incident reinforces the urgent need for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, increased public awareness, and community responsibility in safeguarding children. Parents and guardians must be supported to find safer alternatives to child labour, while authorities must intensify surveillance and response mechanisms to protect at-risk children.

Ultimately, protecting children is a collective responsibility, one that demands vigilance, education, and zero tolerance for any form of exploitation or abuse.
