Former Mayor Guilty of Sexual Abuse of 16-Year-Old Child at House Party

A jury has found former DeRidder mayor Misty Roberts, 43, guilty of sexual offenses involving a 16-year-old child, raising serious child protection concerns about the responsibility of adults to safeguard children from exploitation.
The incident reportedly took place during a 2024 house party at Roberts’ home, where the teenager testified that he was intoxicated at the time of the sexual encounter. The situation highlights major safeguarding risks, including children being exposed to alcohol, lack of proper supervision, and the abuse of authority by an adult in a position of power.
During the trial, Roberts’ children and nephew testified that they saw her with the child during the party, though they did not witness the sexual act itself. A DoorDash driver also testified that emergency contraception was delivered to Roberts’ home after the reported encounter. Prosecutors additionally presented a photo from the party showing Roberts in a bikini with the child standing close to her.
Roberts was convicted of carnal knowledge of a child and indecent behavior with a child, both felony offenses. She faces a potential combined sentence of up to 17 years in prison and will be required to register as a Tier 1 sex offender.
The case highlights key safeguarding lessons:
-
Adults have a legal and ethical duty to protect every child from sexual exploitation and abuse.
-
Allowing children access to alcohol increases their vulnerability to harm and abuse.
-
Positions of authority must never be used to exploit or take advantage of a child.
Roberts is scheduled to be sentenced on April 17, and the case serves as a reminder of the importance of strong safeguarding measures, community vigilance, and accountability for anyone who harms a child.
