From Glory to Struggle: The Harsh Reality of Unity Schools

Nigeria’s 104 Federal Unity Colleges, once symbols of academic excellence, are now plagued by deteriorating infrastructure, overcrowding, and underfunding. The recent diphtheria outbreak at King’s College, Lagos, which left one student dead and several hospitalized, highlights the poor living conditions in these schools. Overcrowded hostels, inadequate sanitation, and lack of clean water have worsened the situation.
King’s College has also endured eight months without public electricity due to a N70 million debt, forcing students to study in darkness. Other Unity Schools face similar power issues, relying on costly diesel generators and alumni donations. Overcrowding is severe, with classrooms holding up to 55 students and hostels cramming in more than their capacity. At FGC Enugu, female students reportedly defecate in plastic bags due to non-functional toilets.
Teacher shortages further undermine education quality, with many schools relying on poorly paid PTA teachers. Mismanagement of PTA funds and government underfunding have worsened conditions despite a tuition hike from N45,000 to N100,000 per year.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa has promised reforms, including improved facilities and staffing. However, urgent action is needed to restore the schools’ former glory and prevent further decline.
