In a disturbing case of cross-border human trafficking, Ghanaian authorities have rescued a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was lured from Enugu under the guise of a cleaning job but was instead forced into prostitution in Tarkwa, Ghana.

The Western Central Regional Police arrested 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna on November 3, 2025, following a tip-off from the affected child’s father, Ogbonna Onuigbo, who reported her missing in October.

The girl managed to contact her father after escaping confinement with the help of a passerby. A medical examination revealed she was five weeks pregnant at the time of rescue.

Investigations revealed that a woman named Golden Blessing, currently on the run, orchestrated the trafficking by deceiving the affected child and handing her over to Ogbonna, who confined her and profited from her exploitation.

Police say efforts are underway to apprehend the fugitive suspect, believed to be in Nigeria. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to fighting human trafficking and praised the public for their timely intervention.

This case echoes a similar incident reported in August, where Enugu State Police arrested a man for transnational trafficking and rescued two teenage girls from Cross River State.

Every child has the right to protection from exploitation and abuse. Under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, governments must protect children from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse. Children must be safeguarded from abduction, sale, or trafficking for any purpose.
