Horror in Oyo: Students Allegedly Beat Teacher to Death Over Gambling

A tragic incident has rocked Soun High School in Oyo State, following the death of a teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, who was allegedly attacked by his own students while attempting to stop them from gambling during school hours.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Adegoke confronted the students after discovering them gambling inside a classroom. The students turned violent, beating him severely and leaving him with broken limbs. He was rushed to a hospital but later died as a result of the injuries.
A statement issued by concerned educators expressed pain and outrage, describing the attack as a shameful assault on the entire teaching profession, not just the late educator.
They also called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), TESCOM, and security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, insisting that parents must also face consequences for the actions of their children.
The incident has been tagged as a growing sign of moral decline within homes and schools. Educators are now urging authorities to intensify efforts in restoring discipline, strengthening safety within schools, and protecting teaching personnel from violent threats.
Attempts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for confirmation were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the students allegedly involved are said to be in hiding, heightening tension within the community and sparking widespread outrage.
The development has again renewed nationwide calls for strong policies to safeguard teachers and ensure schools remain safe, structured environments for learning.
Every student has a right to learn in a safe environment, and every teacher has a right to carry out lawful duties without fear of violence. These rights must be upheld to preserve the sanctity of education and protect all within the school system.
