One of the domestic workers of Aribemchukwu, the daughter of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia who was murdered in her Lagos home, has confessed to being involved in the crime, according to a police source. The victim, known as Chuchu, was killed at her residence in Parkview Estate, Ikoyi.

Despite a family source claiming that she was killed on Tuesday night, her body was found outside her residence on Wednesday morning. Three domestic employees— a house help, a security guard, and a driver— have been arrested in connection with the murder.

A police source, who requested anonymity, revealed that the house help has confessed to the murder during interrogation. The source also clarified that the victim was killed inside her room and that her body was dragged outside and dumped by the gate.

The source reported that the suspects tried to clean up blood stains after the murder but missed some areas due to the crime being committed at night. The victim was killed in her room, and her body was dragged to the front gate to make it appear as if she had been killed there. The cleaning attempt was incomplete, leaving behind visible blood stains.

The house help confessed to the crime during interrogation, admitting involvement and matching the evidence found. The suspects also stole the deceased’s valuables immediately after the murder. They had been employed for only a week before the incident. Aribemchukwu, the victim, was a doctor who had recently married. State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that investigations are still ongoing and promised updates as new information becomes available.

Addressing trust and security issues when employing domestic staff involves a combination of thorough vetting, clear policies, and ongoing oversight. Here are strategies to help manage these concerns:

  1. Background Checks: Conduct comprehensive background checks, including criminal history, employment history, and references. Verify the credibility of past employers and assess any red flags.
  2. Reference Checks: Contact previous employers or references to gather insights about the candidate’s reliability, work ethic, and character.
  3. Clear Agreements: Draft a detailed employment contract outlining job duties, expectations, confidentiality agreements, and policies regarding conduct and security.
  4. Confidentiality Agreements: Have staff sign confidentiality agreements to protect personal and sensitive information and ensure they understand the importance of privacy.
  5. Secure Access: Limit access to sensitive areas of your home, such as personal files, valuables, or secure rooms. Use locks, safes, or other security measures to protect these areas.
  6. Key and Access Control: Use controlled access methods like key cards or coded locks rather than handing out physical keys. Change locks or codes periodically if necessary.
  7. Monitor and Supervise: Implement regular supervision and monitoring. This can include periodic check-ins, having cameras in common areas (with staff’s knowledge), or scheduling regular performance reviews.
  8. Clear Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with domestic staff. Address any concerns or issues promptly to avoid misunderstandings and build a positive working relationship.
  9. Insurance: Consider purchasing insurance that covers theft or property damage by employees. This can provide an additional layer of protection and peace of mind.
