A handful of new laws passed by the Alabama Legislature go into effect with the start of the new year, including one aimed at improving affordable child care for working parents.
HB358, sponsored by House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville), introduces two tax credits and a grant program to support child care accessibility. This bill is part of a “Working for Alabama” package aimed at boosting the state’s workforce participation rate, which ranks near the bottom nationally. Advocates have emphasized how the lack of affordable child care has been a barrier for many, particularly single mothers, in joining or returning to the workforce.
Here are some bills that take effect on January 1 include:
SB240: Allows probate judges to involuntarily commit individuals with drug addiction related to mental illness and provides a way to suspend jail sentences for misdemeanants to allow for care under an involuntary commitment order.
SB291: Requires mayors and city council members to complete 10 hours of mandatory training on municipal duties, including ethics, budgeting, and the open meetings law.
