The Senate has approved a bill aimed at ensuring Nigerian students gain essential technical skills before graduating, addressing the skills gap in the education system. The bill, known as the “Strengthening Career and Technical Training Bill, 2024,” has successfully passed its second reading.
Sponsored by Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, the bill seeks to equip students with the necessary technical skills before they complete their secondary or tertiary education.
Senator Musa, representing Niger East Senatorial District, highlighted the bill’s significance in tackling a fundamental challenge facing the nation. He pointed out the gap between education and the labor market, emphasizing the need for comprehensive, job-oriented training. Despite Nigeria’s abundant talent, many individuals remain unemployed or underemployed due to a lack of technical skills required by modern industries.
Musa stated, “Many of our educational programs are theoretical and do not equip students with practical, market-relevant skills. Nigeria risks falling behind in the global economy if we do not invest in building a highly skilled, competitive workforce. Emerging sectors such as renewable energy, ICT, and biotechnology require a workforce trained in cutting-edge skills.”
