George Stinney Jr., a 14-year-old Black boy executed in 1944, was officially exonerated after a judge ruled his conviction was based on a coerced confession. Stinney was accused of killing two white girls in Alcolu, South Carolina. His trial lasted less than a day, and an all-white jury took just ten minutes to convict him.

At only 95 pounds, Stinney was so small that he had to sit on a book in the electric chair. His family, fearful for their safety, remained silent for decades.

After years of efforts, a judge granted a writ of coram nobis, acknowledging a grave miscarriage of justice. Stinney’s family refused a pardon, insisting he was innocent from the start.
