A tragic incident rocked the Abakpa area of Kaduna North Local Government Area on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, leading to the death of a 12-year-old boy and injuries to seven others.

Initial eyewitness reports suggested an explosion, sending shockwaves through the community. However, the Kaduna State Police Command has clarified that the incident was caused by the accidental discharge of a locally made firearm, known as a Dane gun, not an explosive device.

Residents recounted the harrowing moments, with one witness recalling efforts to save affected people who tragically succumbed before reaching the hospital. The community remains in mourning, grappling with grief and fear, as calls for increased security and control of local firearms grow louder.

Security agencies, including the Commissioner of Police, the Garrison Commander, and the State Director of the Department of State Services, have visited the scene and assured a thorough investigation.

“The Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” said DSP Mansir Hassan, the police spokesperson.

The incident has heightened concerns over the proliferation of locally made weapons and underscored the urgent need for stricter firearm control measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
