‘Miracle’ Baby Born After U.K.’s First Successful Womb Transplant
In a groundbreaking medical moment, Grace Davidson, 36, became the first person in the U.K. to give birth after receiving a womb transplant, a gift from her sister, Amy Purdie. Grace and her husband Angus, 37, welcomed their daughter Amy Isabel in February at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London.
Grace was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, a rare condition that meant she had no womb and couldn’t carry a pregnancy. Her sister Amy, already a mother of two, selflessly donated her womb in 2023, making history with the U.K.’s first transplant of its kind.
Following fertility treatments and the transplant, Grace gave birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 4 lbs. 8 oz., a moment she called “really wonderful” and overwhelming. The couple named their daughter Amy in honor of her aunt, and Isabel after surgeon Isabel Quiroga, who co-led the transplant team.
“This is the greatest gift we could ever have asked for,” Grace said. Grace plans to undergo a second pregnancy before the donated womb is removed, which would allow her to stop taking immunosuppressants. She and Angus hope their story helps open the door to womb transplants becoming an option for others who dream of carrying a child.
