A tragic shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville unfolded on Wednesday when 17-year-old Solomon Henderson fatally shot 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante in the school cafeteria before turning the gun on himself. Another student sustained a graze wound during the incident.
Authorities and experts have since revealed disturbing details about Henderson’s background. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Henderson left behind a manifesto and a series of troubling social media posts. ADL’s Carla Hill described Henderson as a “self-loathing incel” who appeared to embrace extreme and hateful ideologies, including antisemitism and anti-Black rhetoric.
Hill noted that incel forums—online spaces often associated with misogyny and radicalization—may have influenced Henderson. “What happens on the incel forums is that people of color are told the only reason they’re incels is because of their color, and so it pushes them toward other extreme ideologies,” Hill explained. Henderson reportedly identified as a “mentalcel,” a term used for individuals who attribute their involuntary celibacy to intellectual or learning disabilities.
Metro Nashville police confirmed they are investigating Henderson’s online writings and social media activity to uncover the motive behind the attack. Some of his posts allegedly included statements of internalized racism, such as expressing shame about his identity as a Black person.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the dangers of online radicalization and the need for increased mental health and social support systems for at-risk youth.
Escalante’s death has left the community grieving as questions arise about how such violence could have been prevented.
