National Nutrition Month Highlights the Power of Nutrition in Protecting Children’s Health and Development

National Nutrition Month®, observed every March, highlights the important role nutrition plays in supporting children’s health, development, and overall well-being. Established in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the campaign encourages families, schools, and communities to promote healthy eating habits and active lifestyles that help children grow and thrive.
From a child protection and safeguarding perspective, proper nutrition is a key part of ensuring children’s rights to health and development. Nutritious food supports physical growth, brain development, and learning ability. Children who receive balanced meals are more likely to concentrate in school, stay active, and build strong immune systems that protect them from illness.
This year’s theme, “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” emphasizes how healthy food choices can positively shape a child’s future. Access to nutritious meals, safe drinking water, and regular physical activity helps children develop lifelong habits that support their well-being. For many children, especially those in vulnerable communities, schools and community programs play an essential role in providing healthy meals and nutrition education.
The campaign also encourages parents and caregivers to learn more about balanced diets that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy sources of protein. Teaching children about healthy food choices at an early age empowers them to build positive habits that last into adulthood.
Nutrition professionals, such as registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetics technicians (NDTRs), also play an important role in guiding families with reliable, science-based advice.
Ultimately, National Nutrition Month serves as a reminder that protecting children includes ensuring they have consistent access to nutritious food that supports their growth, learning, and long-term health.
