Nearly 5 years after schools closed, the nation gets a new report card

Nearly five years after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted schools across the country, new data from the Nation’s Report Card presents a mixed picture of student progress. While there are signs of improvement in math, where many students have regained some of the ground lost during the pandemic, overall academic performance remains below pre-2019 levels.

The latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reveal that both fourth- and eighth-graders continue to struggle in reading and math, highlighting a learning decline that began even before the pandemic. Despite billions of dollars in federal emergency funding being spent on interventions such as tutoring and summer school, the data suggests that many students have yet to fully recover.

As schools exhaust the last of the $190 billion in pandemic relief funds, educators and policymakers face an urgent challenge: How can they ensure that students not only catch up but also thrive in the years ahead? The results underscore the need for sustained efforts to address learning gaps and strengthen the education system for future generations.
