As the new year begins, New York ushers in several new laws designed to improve the lives of families and workers statewide.

  • Minimum Wage Increase: In Western New York, employees will see a 50-cent increase in their hourly wage, rising from $15 to $15.50.
  • Paid Prenatal Leave: A groundbreaking law now mandates 20 hours of paid time off for pregnant employees to attend pregnancy-related medical appointments, such as sonograms. Employers cannot require proof of pregnancy.
  • Lower Insulin Costs: The new legislation requires health insurers to cover diabetes treatment equipment and eliminate co-pays for insulin for insured individuals.
  • School Heat Safety: School districts must now create plans to mitigate extreme heat in classrooms, including setting a maximum allowable temperature to protect students and staff.

These changes, which take effect at midnight, signal a major shift toward improving quality of life for New Yorkers in 2025.
