Newborn Baby Girls Can Menstruate — Paediatrician
A paediatrician, Dr. Ayobola Adebowale, popularly known as Your Baby Doctor, has clarified that some newborn girls may experience light bleeding shortly after birth, a harmless condition known as pseudo-menstruation or neonatal menstruation.
In a video shared online, Dr. Adebowale explained that the bleeding happens due to hormonal changes. While in the womb, babies are exposed to their mother’s hormones. After delivery, the sudden withdrawal of these hormones can cause a brief, period-like discharge.
She stressed that parents should not panic, noting that the condition is normal and usually resolves within a few days without treatment. Dr. Adebowale added that persistent or heavy bleeding, or bleeding occurring after the first week of life, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Medical experts confirm that neonatal menstruation is generally mild and temporary. Parents are encouraged to pay attention to symptoms but remain reassured that, in most cases, no intervention is needed.
