Is This the Remedy for Nigeria’s Education Crisis? Federal Government Launches “Snacks for Thought” to Tackle Child Hunger in Schools

The Federal Government has launched a new breakfast initiative known as “Snacks for Thought” (PBAT FEEDS), aimed at improving learning outcomes by addressing hunger among school children across the country.

The programme, introduced under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), is designed to provide nutritious morning meals to pupils before the start of classes, with the goal of enhancing concentration, attendance, and overall academic performance.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the National Programme Manager of RH-NHGSFP, Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital development.

She said the programme goes beyond feeding, positioning it as an integrated approach that combines nutrition, education, and economic empowerment.

According to her, “Snacks for Thought” is expected to improve students’ cognitive performance, increase school attendance and retention, and support local agricultural value chains through structured food procurement.

“A hungry child cannot learn. This programme ensures that no child sits in a classroom without nourishment,” she said.

Adebowale added that the initiative would also create opportunities for women, youth, and smallholder farmers by linking them to the school feeding supply chain.

As part of the rollout, the government also unveiled the “Adopt-a-School” platform, which allows public institutions, private sector organisations, and development partners to contribute to expanding the reach of the programme nationwide.

The launch event in Abuja was attended by government officials, lawmakers, development partners, and other stakeholders, alongside school children who received meal packs, symbolising the programme’s focus on child welfare and inclusive development.

The initiative complements existing school feeding efforts by ensuring children are adequately nourished at the start of the school day, with the aim of strengthening education outcomes and supporting long-term national development.

The Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme remains a flagship social investment policy focused on improving child nutrition, enhancing education, and supporting local food systems across Nigeria.
