Nigerian Man Jailed for Raping Teen Girl in UK, Faces Deportation
A deeply disturbing case has emerged from Leeds, United Kingdom, where 29-year-old Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl.
The incident occurred on March 25, when the affected child’s bus terminated unexpectedly at Morley. With no working phone and little money, she accepted Okoronta’s offer to share a taxi, only to be misled to his flat in Bradford, where he raped her in a locked toilet.
Despite her trauma, the affected child managed to escape and alert the police. Okoronta was convicted at Bradford Crown Court on three counts of rape and will serve an additional three years on extended licence.
He will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life and is expected to be deported to Nigeria after serving his sentence.
Judge Sophie McKone condemned Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator”, stating he exploited the teenager’s vulnerability with premeditated intent.
The affected child’s statement revealed the lasting psychological damage: “It turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks and nightmares. I can’t take a bus without feeling uncomfortable.”
Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe praised the affected child’s courage and urged others to report sexual offences without delay.
This case underscores the fundamental rights of children as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Every child has the right to be protected from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse.
