Ohio Moves to Shield Children as AI Enters Classrooms, Releases Statewide School Policy

Ohio has taken a decisive step to protect children in classrooms increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, releasing a model policy that sets clear safeguards for how AI can be used in K-12 schools across the state.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce unveiled the policy this month as part of a state law requiring every school district, community school, and STEM school to adopt formal AI usage rules by July 1, 2026. Officials say the goal is not only innovation, but the protection of children’s rights, privacy, and overall well-being in learning environments.

Putting Child Safety at the Center of Technology Use

As AI tools rapidly enter schools, the state’s guidance places child protection at the forefront. The policy emphasizes that technology must serve children — not expose them to harm, exploitation, or data misuse.

Central to the guidelines is the protection of children’s personal information. Schools are required to ensure that any AI tools comply with existing privacy laws, limiting how student data is collected, stored, and shared. This provision addresses growing concerns about children’s digital footprints and the long-term risks of data exploitation.

The policy also draws firm boundaries around responsible use. AI, it states, should enhance learning rather than replace student effort, ensuring that children continue to develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills essential for their future.

Guarding Against Emerging Digital Risks

Recognizing new online threats, the policy encourages schools to ban the use of AI for bullying, harassment, and harmful content creation. This includes emerging risks such as deepfakes, impersonation, and digital manipulation — all of which child-safety advocates warn can seriously impact children’s mental health and security.

Parents and caregivers are also positioned as key partners. Districts are urged to clearly communicate how AI tools are used in classrooms and what protections are in place, reinforcing transparency and empowering families to advocate for their children’s safety.

A Preventive Approach to Child Protection

Education officials describe the policy as a preventive measure — one designed to protect children before harm occurs, rather than responding after damage has been done. By setting statewide expectations now, Ohio aims to reduce misuse, close policy gaps between districts, and ensure that children are not left vulnerable as technology advances faster than regulation.

As AI continues to reshape education nationwide, Ohio’s approach signals a growing recognition that children’s rights must remain central in digital learning spaces. The policy underscores a clear message: innovation in education must never come at the cost of children’s safety, dignity, or fundamental rights.
