Parenting & Protection Are Language Sensitive: LegacyNOW Leadership Project Alumni Hangout 2.0

When we think about protecting children, policies, systems, and practices often come to mind. Yet, one of the most powerful tools in safeguarding and nurturing children is something we use every day and this is “language”. The words we choose, the tone we employ, and even the silences we maintain have profound consequences for our precious children.

It is against this backdrop that the LegacyNOW Leadership Project Alumni Hangout 2.0 convenes under the theme: “Parenting & Protection Are Language Sensitive: Exploring a Revolution for the Best Interest of the Child.”

This second edition of the Alumni Hangout promises to be more than just a meeting point, it is a call to re-examine how our words shape the world children grow into.

Why Language Matters in Parenting and Protection

Language is not neutral. A careless word can wound deeply, while an affirming one can build confidence and courage. In the realm of child protection, language has an even sharper edge: it can either empower a child to speak out and feel safe, or reinforce cycles of silence, fear, and invisibility.

From the phrases parents use at home, to the terms educators choose in classrooms, to the cultural and systemic language of institutions, every word carries weight. To safeguard children effectively, we must become conscious of the languages of love, respect, affirmation, and protection.

Guided by Africa’s Leading Voice

Facilitating this transformative conversation is Mr. Taiwo AKINLAMI, Africa’s leading voice on Child Protection and Family Strengthening. . With decades of frontline experience, advocacy, and system reforms, Mr. Akinlami has consistently emphasized that child safeguarding is not only about structures but also about the daily practices that shape children’s lives.

In this session, he will challenge us to rethink how we use language whether verbal, emotional, cultural, and systemic and how these languages can be harnessed to advance the best interest of the child.
