Poor Diet, Inactivity Fuel Alarming Rise of Diabetes Among Nigerian Children, Expert Warns

Rising cases of diabetes among Nigerian children are becoming a growing child health and safeguarding concern, as experts warn that poor diet, physical inactivity and low awareness among parents are putting many young people at risk. Health specialists say the condition is often overlooked in children because many caregivers mistakenly believe diabetes only affects adults.

Paediatric endocrinologist Oluwakemi Ashubu of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, noted that unhealthy eating habits, increasing consumption of sugary and highly processed foods, and reduced physical activity are contributing to a worrying rise in childhood diabetes. These lifestyle factors, combined with genetic risks, are exposing more children to a chronic illness that can have serious long-term consequences if not detected early.

From a child protection perspective, experts stress that early recognition and proper care are essential to prevent avoidable health complications. Children living with undiagnosed diabetes may experience symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss and persistent fatigue, conditions that can interfere with their schooling, development and overall wellbeing.

Ashubu advised parents and caregivers to watch for the “four Ts” warning signs: frequent trips to the toilet, excessive thirst, tiredness and becoming thinner despite eating normally. She added that children who were previously toilet-trained may suddenly begin bedwetting again, while others may struggle to stay awake or concentrate in school.

Without proper treatment, childhood diabetes can lead to severe health emergencies and long-term complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. Experts therefore emphasise the need for greater public awareness, healthier lifestyles and early medical screening to ensure children receive timely care and protection from preventable health risks.
