Beyond the Math Wars: Focus on Teachers to Improve Instruction

The debate over how math should be taught has long been divisive, with two extremes: one advocating for systematic, explicit instruction and the other promoting student-led, constructivist approaches. Both extremes are seen as ineffective for fostering deep mathematical understanding. The real issue, however, is that students need both types of instruction, guided by teachers with a strong understanding of the subject and effective teaching methods. This debate intensified after the release of A Nation at Risk (1983), which highlighted the U.S.’s math performance gap. In response, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) developed new standards, sparking controversy and resistance.
