A survey found that 75% of parents wish grandparents would respect their wishes about gift-giving, with the most common concern being the lack of physical space to store all the gifts. The issue is highlighted by the sheer number of presents a child can receive, if each of a child’s four grandparents and aunts/uncles give multiple gifts, the total can easily reach 22 items for a young child, which may be excessive. Too much gift-giving can undermine parental values, hinder imagination, encourage overconsumption, and teach children to focus on material gifts rather than relationships with family members.
