A recent University of Oregon study, led by Professor Leslie Leve, reveals a concerning link between mothers’ childhood trauma and their children’s behaviour issues, even in cases where the children were adopted as newborns and raised by adoptive parents. The research, published in Development and Psychopathology, emphasises the impact of early-life stressors on future generations’ well-being. Notably, if adoptive mothers also experienced childhood stress, the children’s behaviour problems were more pronounced. The study, spanning over a decade and involving 561 adopted children and their families, highlights the importance of addressing and preventing childhood trauma and providing support for those affected. Looking ahead, researchers aim to explore how stress from one generation affects the next and identify positive environmental factors that could mitigate behavioural risks in children exposed to early trauma.
