This year, Grant High School Principal James McGee implemented a cell-phone-free policy on campus, aiming to improve student focus, reduce online bullying, and minimize drug dealings. While he anticipated resistance from students and parents, one unexpected outcome has been the revival of lively lunchtime interactions among students. Under the new policy, approximately 2,200 students must store their phones in Yondr pouches, which can only be unlocked at designated exits. This change has allowed for more genuine conversations, as students are now engaging with each other instead of being glued to their screens.
