The Manitowoc Public School District (MPSD) has been grappling with declining enrollment, prompting them to request a comprehensive audit of all district facilities last year. Superintendent James Feil, holding a detailed 319-page report received in May, expressed concern over a significant backlog of deferred maintenance and a lack of modernization in school facilities. The audit highlighted widespread safety and security issues across the district and concluded that current conditions do not meet the standards required for a 21st-century educational environment. Feil acknowledged that while some issues were already known, the audit underscored the urgent need for improvements.
