Today marks 65 years since a pivotal moment in New Orleans civil rights history, when three six-year-old girls stepped into classrooms that had been segregated for generations. There are several events taking place around the city to celebrate the legacy of the New Orleans Four. On November 14, 1960, Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost integrated McDonogh 19 Elementary School, just six years after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education ruling declared segregated schools unconstitutional.
