New Study Links Problematic Media use in Toddlers to Long-Term Emotional Issues

< 1 min read

A longitudinal study highlighted in Computers in Human Behavior reveals that children as young as two years old can exhibit problematic media use, defined as excessive engagement that interferes with social and emotional functioning. Symptoms include difficulty transitioning from media, obsession with screens, and deception about use. Led by Sarah M. Coyne of Brigham Young University, the study monitored 269 children aged 2.5 to 5.5 years, using the Problematic Media Use Measure Short Form to assess behaviors and frequency of screen time. This research underscores the need for early intervention to mitigate potential long-term issues associated with media use.
