Parents think their kids are doing well in school. More often than not, they’re wrong.

LaShanta Mire discovered that her daughter, despite good grades, couldn’t read and was not performing at grade level in her public school in Fort Worth, Texas. Realizing the discrepancy between her child’s actual academic progress and the information provided by the school, Mire sought help from a parents group and transferred her children to new schools for more accurate assessments. This situation reflects a broader issue where schools struggle to communicate effectively with families about academic challenges, including chronic absenteeism, exacerbated by the pandemic. Research indicates that parents often receive limited or inaccurate information about their children’s performance, highlighting the need for improved communication from schools.
