Second Largest US School District Taps AI to Reach Non-English-Speaking Students

< 1 min read

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is introducing an AI-powered educational tool named Ed, aiming to offer students personalized learning plans and resources. This tool can translate plans into over 100 languages, a valuable resource for the district’s diverse population. With over 15% of students still learning English, it addresses a significant need. Ed also assists with administrative tasks like application submissions and provides parents with updates on their child’s progress and reminders about assignments and programs through a chatbot interface. Despite emphasizing the importance of human interaction, LAUSD views Ed as a tool to prepare students for the future while maintaining a balance between technology and traditional learning methods. Positive feedback from pilot tests has led to the decision to expand Ed across the entire district.
