Teacher pay raises, insurance premium increases? Budget fight incoming in Alabama

Alabama wants to give teachers a raise next year. But that could come at a cost: rising premiums for their health insurance. State superintendent Eric Mackey said he is “very concerned” about rising costs and a budget shortfall in the state’s teacher insurance program, PEEHIP. He warned this week that tough decisions might be needed as officials try to balance goals for educator pay and benefits.
