A four-year study tracking 7,769 New South Wales students from Year 6 to Year 9 found that while students’ motivation and engagement typically decline during adolescence, effective teaching support can mitigate this drop. Findings showed that although there was an 18% overall decline in student motivation and engagement from Year 6 to Year 9, teaching support was consistently linked to higher motivation and engagement. Notably, the influence of teaching support on these factors increased each year, with a 40% rise in its impact from Year 6 to Year 9.
