March 22 2024- Gyal Lo, a Tibetan educational sociologist, is proficient in Mandarin Chinese but chooses not to speak it. He has dedicated his efforts to raising awareness about Beijing’s extensive educational reforms in Tibetan regions, refusing to use the language he associates with colonial oppression. China’s reforms include the expansion of boarding schools, even for children as young as four, and the replacement of Tibetan with Mandarin Chinese as the primary language of instruction. While Beijing claims these changes are to better prepare Tibetan children for adulthood in a Mandarin-speaking country, Dr. Gyal Lo contends that the true intention is to erode Tibetan identity, particularly by targeting the youngest members of Tibetan society.
