Universities Braced for Financial Fallout From Nigerian Currency Crisis

< 1 min read

Universities in the UK that rely heavily on Nigerian students may face financial challenges this year due to Nigeria’s severe currency crisis. The naira’s devaluation and rising inflation have raised concerns that Nigerian students could be priced out of studying in the UK. Nigerian students, who make up a significant portion of the international student body—being the third largest group after India and China—could see a dramatic decrease in numbers. Last year, 72,355 Nigerian students were enrolled in UK universities, a 66% increase from the previous year. The crisis, along with new visa restrictions, is expected to significantly impact the enrollment of Nigerian students, particularly at 20 universities where they constitute over 10% of postgraduate students.
