Sweden has announced a sweeping reform in its education sector, with one of the most notable measures being a nationwide ban on mobile phones in schools. The government confirmed that the ban will take effect in autumn 2026, covering all schools and after-school clubs.

Officials say the move is intended to strengthen both security and study conditions for students, ensuring that classrooms remain spaces focused on learning and personal development.

Alongside the phone ban, the government is rolling out a broader reform package that includes updates to the curriculum, adjustments to the grading system, and improvements in teacher training.

Speaking to The Guardian, Education Minister Simona Mohamsson described the decision as a landmark step: “What we are presenting today is a historic budget investment in schools and the biggest reform agenda in over 30 years.”

To fund the changes, 95 million Swedish Kronor has been allocated for 2026, followed by 100 million Swedish Kronor in 2027.

This reform is about protecting children’s right to education in an environment free from unnecessary distractions, where their learning and well-being are placed at the center.
