According to Shelter’s latest report, Homelessness in England 2024, thousands of children across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex are facing homelessness this Christmas. The report estimates that 9,405 children are currently living in temporary accommodation in the South East. Brighton & Hove alone recorded 1,411 homeless children, followed by 918 in Medway Towns and 665 in Hastings, East Sussex. Even affluent areas like Surrey have seen 1,342 children without a permanent home.
Shelter warns that these figures may underestimate the true scale of homelessness, as they do not account for informal homelessness, such as sofa surfing. The charity attributes the rise in homelessness to the severe shortage of homes available for social rent. As a result, many families are trapped in temporary, overcrowded accommodations, often in B&Bs with shared facilities.
The emotional and psychological toll on children growing up homeless is significant. Tia, who spent her early years in temporary accommodation with her mother, recalls sharing a bed for most of her childhood. While she is now studying at college, she still feels the lasting effects of her early experiences, describing her life in temporary accommodation as a “safety net full of massive holes.”
Polly Neate, chief executive of Shelter, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, urging the government to build more social housing to address the housing crisis. She warns that without action, more families will face the heartbreaking reality of homelessness this Christmas.
