A tragic incident in Namibia’s pi Region has left the community in shock, as four young children aged 3 to 6 suffocated after becoming trapped in an unused freezer. While playing, they accidentally locked themselves inside, unable to open the latch from within. One parent discovered the situation after finding the children’s shoes nearby. Two children were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo confirmed that the children suffocated after being trapped in the freezer for about an hour and a half. He noted that the hook on the freezer could only be opened from the outside, preventing their escape.

The incident has raised concerns about the accessibility of the non-functional freezer, which was left unsecured outside one of the families’ homes. Namibian authorities are investigating the tragedy to understand the circumstances of the children’s deaths. As the community mourns, there are questions about preventive measures that could have avoided this heartbreaking outcome.
