Ruth Auta, a 28-year-old nurse, has been sentenced to prison after leaving her 10-week-old son, Joshua Akerele, alone at her nurses’ accommodation at Royal Bolton Hospital on December 20, 2022. Auta went to work and returned over eight hours later to find her son unresponsive. Despite emergency attempts to resuscitate him, Joshua was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Ruth Auta, who attempted to flee the country after pleading guilty to child cruelty, was sentenced to three years in prison by Bolton Crown Court. Despite initial claims that she found her 10-week-old son unresponsive after falling asleep beside him, CCTV footage revealed she had left him alone at home for over eight hours while she went to work.

Evidence also showed she misled the police about her childcare arrangements and attempted to flee to Nigeria. The exact cause of Joshua’s death, potentially due to overheating or other factors, could not be determined. Auta, a nurse, failed to show remorse and must now face the consequences of her actions.
