A federal judge in Maryland has temporarily blocked President Trump’s executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship, marking the second ruling against the policy amid a wave of legal challenges.

U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman, appointed by President Joe Biden, granted a preliminary injunction following a lawsuit filed by immigrants-rights groups, including CASA and the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project. The lawsuit argues that Trump’s directive violates the Constitution and federal law.

The executive order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” aimed to deny U.S. citizenship to children born in the country to mothers who are undocumented or on temporary visas, if the father is not a citizen or lawful resident.

“This is a victory for our families, for our country, and for the Constitution,” said George Escobar of CASA, praising the pregnant women who challenged the order.
