The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed widespread reports claiming it directed schools to limit Senior Secondary students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, on behalf of the Head of National Office, the Council described the reports as “unfounded assumptions” and urged schools and the public to disregard them.

WAEC clarified that it has not issued any directive restricting subject combinations and that such authority lies solely with the Federal Government through relevant educational agencies.

The Council explained that its role is limited to implementing government-approved curricula through fair and credible examinations.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, fairness, and equitable assessment for all candidates across its five member countries, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia.

It further advised schools and stakeholders to rely only on official communications for accurate information regarding examination guidelines.

In conclusion, WAEC’s clarification reinforces every child’s right to education and equal opportunity, ensuring that no student is unfairly restricted or disadvantaged in pursuing their academic interests.
