WAEC Debunks Rumours of 2025 WASSCE Cancellation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has strongly debunked a viral fake press release falsely claiming that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had been cancelled.

The fake statement, which circulated widely on social media on Saturday, July 19, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had jointly cancelled the exam due to alleged widespread malpractice and question paper leaks.

In a swift and firm response issued Sunday, July 20, WAEC categorically denied the report, describing it as false, misleading, and the work of mischief-makers intent on sowing panic among students and undermining public trust.

WAEC also clarified that marking of examination scripts has just concluded, and results are on track to be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.

In light of the misinformation, WAEC urged the public to rely only on verified channels, such as its official social media handles, accredited national media, and the Public Affairs Department, for authentic updates.

Beyond reputational concerns, this incident speaks to a broader threat to the rights of children. Deliberately spreading false claims about such a pivotal exam undermines the mental and psychological well-being of candidates and creates unnecessary fear and uncertainty around their academic progress.

Access to accurate information is a critical component of a child’s right as enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; therefore, students should be protected from disinformation.

WAEC’s response underscores its duty not only to conduct credible assessments but also to safeguard the integrity of educational processes and the emotional security of candidates.
