Zamfara Launches Mass Polio Vaccination to Protect Children’s Right to Life

The Zamfara State Government has launched an urgent polio vaccination campaign targeting 1.4 million children, following the recent detection of four new cases in Gummi and Tsafe Local Government Areas. The initiative aims to protect children from a disease that can cause lifelong paralysis and, in severe cases, threaten survival.

Dr. Murtala Salahudeen, Incident Manager of Zamfara’s Emergency Operation Centre, explained that 1,997 vaccination teams have been deployed for a house-to-house campaign to ensure every child is reached. Each vaccinated child will receive an Indermine pack, reinforcing the effort to secure their health and well-being.

Polio, a preventable disease, poses a direct threat to children’s right to life, a fundamental principle recognized under international conventions, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. By ensuring timely immunization, the state is acting to guarantee that children can survive and thrive in a safe, healthy environment.

UNICEF has pledged continued support to Zamfara’s health authorities, highlighting the importance of collaboration to protect children’s lives. Officials emphasized that safeguarding children from preventable diseases is not only a public health priority but also a moral and legal obligation.

With previous progress showing zero cases in 2025, the re-emergence of polio underscores the urgent need to maintain protective measures. By prioritizing vaccination, Zamfara is taking decisive action to uphold every child’s right to survival, prevent avoidable harm, and secure a healthier future for the state’s youngest residents.
