11 Students and Staff Injured by Flying Rocks as Nigerian Agency Shuts Abuja Quarry

Eleven students and two staff members of Graceland High School were injured after flying rocks from a quarry blast struck the school premises in Abuja.
The incident occurred during examinations when debris from an explosive detonation at the Cornerstone/Istanbul Quarry facility landed inside classrooms, damaging structures and causing panic.
NESREA immediately sealed the quarry following a preliminary investigation, citing violations of the National Environmental (Quarrying and Blasting Operations) Regulations 2013. The agency said the blast posed a direct threat to students, staff, and surrounding communities.
NESREA confirmed that further investigation is ongoing and that sanctions will be enforced in line with existing environmental and safety regulations.
This incident underscores children’s right to safety and their right to learn in a secure environment, as guaranteed under the law.
