14-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide After Pregnancy Confrontation in Benue

A tragic incident occurred in Egba, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, where a 14-year-old secondary school student, Nicknes Ayo, took her own life after facing pressure from her mother to reveal the identity of the person responsible for her pregnancy.
According to a neighbor, Mama Enyi, the young girl had returned home from school in Otukpo on Thursday, showing signs of pregnancy. Her mother confronted her about the pregnancy and threatened to take her to a clinic if she refused to disclose the father’s identity. Under intense pressure, the girl ran away but was later found in her room after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance suspected to be Gammalin.
She was rushed to a local clinic known as ‘Ghana Clinic,’ where the medical director, Dr. Oyaje Sule, confirmed that she had been brought in on Saturday morning. Due to the severity of her condition, she was referred to a hospital in Obagaji, the Agatu local government headquarters. Tragically, she passed away on the way.
The young girl, who had reportedly lost her father a few years ago, has since been buried.
Attempts to reach the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, and the State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, for comments were unsuccessful.
