Child Sexual Abuse

45-Year-Old Bauchi Man Arrested Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of 8-Year-Old Girl

The arrest of a 45-year-old man for allegedly luring an 8-year-old girl into his room and defiling her has exposed critical gaps in child safeguarding, as child rights advocates demand urgent action to protect children.

The suspect, Muhammad Makama, was taken into custody after the affected person’s mother reported the incident to the ‘E’ Division Yelwa, Bauchi, on July 5, 2026. Police confirmed that the child was enticed into the suspect’s residence within the Dorawan Dillalai area of Bauchi metropolis, where the alleged assault occurred.

Police operatives immediately rushed the affected person to the Police Clinic for medical examination and treatment, a crucial first step in preserving evidence and addressing physical trauma. However, child protection experts stress that psychosocial support and long-term counseling are equally vital for the affected child’s recovery and overall well-being.

The suspect, who was assaulted by angry community members following the incident, was also treated at the same facility before being discharged to police custody. While understandable, public outrage must not compromise the legal process, authorities warned.

SP Nafiu Habib, the Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the case is under investigation at the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Bauchi, assuring diligent prosecution.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the act and vowed that justice would be served.

This distressing case underscores the need for stronger community-based child protection systems, awareness campaigns to help children recognize predatory behavior, and safe reporting mechanisms. Every child deserves to grow up free from violence and exploitation, and society must do more to safeguard their future.
