I’m Thankful for a Mom Who Allowed Me the Space to Navigate Things in My Own Unique Way

< 1 min read

I have a strong recall of numbers, which originated from a memorable incident and my mom’s belief in my capabilities. In 1978, my family moved from Massachusetts to Virginia just as I was finishing first grade. My previous school commute was a pleasant walk with my best friend, but in Virginia, I had to take the bus. My mom told me about the bus stop casually, trusting I could handle it. On the first day, I panicked about remembering which bus to take home. An older kid told me to remember the bus number, but I mistakenly focused on the “553” painted on the front bumper instead of the bus sign number. I repeated “553” all day to ensure I got home safely. The next day, I realised the correct number was 7. This experience sharpened my number recall and reinforced my mom’s parenting style of letting me learn independently, fostering courage and self-reliance. I’m grateful for the space she gave me to figure things out and will send her a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift. If it gets lost, I can easily recall the tracking number.
